One of the things I was particularly excited about, was Star Wars-ifying all the patches from the Top Gun flight suits. I really wanted this cosplay to feel "in universe" so I tried my best to mimic the intent of the original Top Gun patches as well as the design.
Av8r Stuff has a bunch of really handy patch layout charts for all the Top Gun characters, and I was able to use those to plan everything out and determining what designs I needed to emulate.
Once I finished my patch designs (see below) I made placement mock ups for the mash-up cosplays based on the Av8r Stuff images. The flight suit image is from the Amazon product listing we purchased them from with an X-Wing pilot harness from an Etsy listing (I think) Photoshopped over the top.
Before I share the detailed views of each patch, I want to give a major shout out to @scrw_luuse who fabricated all 9 different patch designs for me with less than a month's turnaround time (finalizing the designs took longer than I expected it to, isn't that always the way?) This wouldn't have happened without him pinch-hitting, and I super appreciate it!

I've organized the patches below by location. Sorry these images are formatted for Instagram and are a l'il funky in a blog format. Clicking on them will make them larger and more readable.

After graduating from Top Gun, Maverick gets a graduation patch which replaces one of the other patches on his uniform for the remainder of the movie. Since our cosplay was going to be from earlier than that in the film continuity, I chose to turn that patch into a button that I could hand out to folks at Celebration instead.
I've posted these on Facebook and Instagram if you wanna share them on either of those platforms.
